Snow day!

I hope everyone else had as much fun having a rare snow day as we did. We had the day off work and school. We didn’t lose water or power or gas and we did all the things! We made tiny snow men, and muddy snow angels, and had snow ball fights, and made Fanta and Coke snow slushies. We kept a fire going in the fire place all day and had hot cocoa with marshmallows while watching Frozen II. Now back to real life.

Enhance your next massage with warming essential oils:  add a warming blend for $10

One way to promote a cozy feeling is with aromatherapy, using warm essential oils that emanate warming and comforting scents.

  • Cinnamon bark essential oil has a warm, subtly woodsy, comforting aroma that promotes relaxation and soothes the mind. Cinnamon essential oil is also recognized for its potential to support respiratory health. Inhaling its warm aroma may provide a sense of relief during times of seasonal discomfort.
  • Clove essential oil offers a warm, spicy aroma that can create a comforting atmosphere, especially during colder months. Its rich scent is often associated with feelings of coziness and relaxation. Clove oil has been traditionally used for its analgesic properties. Its warming and pain-relieving properties make it a popular choice for massage oil, helping to soothe sore muscles and joints.
  • Sweet orange is a delightful essential oil with a sweet and uplifting scent. Inhaling orange oil can boost your mood and bring a sense of energy and warmth.
  • Rosemary essential oil offers a warm, herbaceous aroma that is both uplifting and clarifying. Its scent can create an energizing atmosphere, promoting mental clarity and focus. It is also recognized for its potential to promote circulation and ease muscle tension. It can be used in massage blends to provide a warming and soothing sensation, and inhaling it may provide relief from respiratory discomfort.

Happy New Year!!!

I’m late, I know. It’s been a wild couple of weeks. I’ve been working at the spa 6 days a week AND my mom was in town for 2 weeks! I haven’t been able to get a newsletter out or take very many private clients. I’ve even had to turn down a few massage requests and I feel terrible about that. However, I’m only picking up that many days at the spa for another week and things are starting to slow down there. There is an end in sight!

New Year's Resolution:  Self-Care

Embrace Relaxation!

It’s that time of year, when we all set our intentions for the new year. In this day and age, people seem to aspire to burn themselves out by overdoing everything - prioritizing hard work over rest and relaxation like the former is more worthy than the latter. But prioritizing self-care is a noble goal.

Ogimi, the friendly village of 3,000 of the world’s longest-living people, is known for its slow pace, and plant based living. They also take great pride in living to 100 and beyond. They have fewer chronic illnesses than most people, including cancer and heart disease, and their rate of dementia is well below the global average.

When most people think about massage, the image of a deep tissue massage might come to mind—firm pressure, intense focus on knots, and that feeling of "good pain". While deep tissue massage is a powerful tool for addressing chronic pain or muscle tightness, it's not always the best option for every situation or client. Sometimes, a lighter massage style, like Swedish massage, can be just as effective—or even better. At your next session, don’t hesitate to discuss how you’re feeling and what you’re looking to achieve. Together, we can determine whether a lighter, Swedish-style massage or a more focused deep tissue session will best meet your needs. Remember: Massage is about your comfort, health, and well-being—sometimes, less pressure can make the biggest impact!

I’m partnering with Elizabeth Essentials to bring you quality essential oils to further promote well-being!

Happy Holidays from Artichoke Hearts Healing!

So... Why Artichokes?

The short answer is: artichokes are sort of my spirit vegetable. I’ve got the long answer posted on my website. Go check it out at https://artichoke-hearts-healing.abmp.com/so-why-artichokes. But, did you know that artichokes actually help with muscle health? Check out the story on the next page!

Upcoming Availability:

  • 30- minute thursday Dec 26 - Appt times: 10:00, 10:35, 11:10, 11:45, 12:20, 12:55, 1:30. Amber Moon Studio

Why Artichokes Are Great for Muscle Health:  Everybody says to eat bananas to help with muscle cramps, but you know what’s even better?

Artichokes aren’t just a tasty treat—they’re also fantastic for supporting your muscles! Packed with magnesium, a mineral essential for muscle function, artichokes can help your muscles contract and relax efficiently. Magnesium also plays a role in energy production, which is crucial for keeping your muscles fueled during physical activity. In addition to magnesium, artichokes are rich in potassium, an electrolyte that helps maintain fluid balance in your muscles and prevents cramping. Plus, their high antioxidant content can reduce oxidative stress, supporting muscle recovery after workouts or a long day on your feet. So whether you're working out or just staying active, adding artichokes to your diet is a simple and delicious way to support your muscle health. Give your body the nourishment it needs to stay strong and energized!

Work from home edition

Working from home be like:

Me: Why does my back always hurt?

Also me:

Working from home has transformed our daily routines, but it has also introduced new challenges—poor posture being one of the most common. Slouching on couches, leaning over laptops, or sitting in poorly designed chairs can lead to chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain. Make time between meetings to schedule a massage. You can come to me, or I can come to you!

Poor Posture and Working from Home:  How massage therapy can help Improve Your Work-From-Home Posture and Relieve Pain

Over time, chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain caused by poor work-from-home posture can worsen, affecting productivity, mood, and even sleep quality. Massage therapy can be a powerful solution to combat the effects of poor posture. Regular sessions help release muscle tension, improve circulation, and restore flexibility to over stressed areas like the neck and lower back. Massage also promotes body awareness, encouraging you to adopt healthier sitting and standing habits. Pairing massage therapy with ergonomic adjustments and frequent movement breaks can create a balanced approach to maintaining a pain-free, productive work-from-home setup. Take care of your body—it’s the best investment you can make for your health and work performance!

Weather Whiplash:  How Drastic Temperature Swings Affect Your Body and How Massage Can Help

This week’s temperature changes - ranging from a high of 45 on Saturday, up to 77 on Monday, and back down again to a low of 34 on Wednesday - can take a toll on your body. Rapid shifts in temperature force your muscles to contract and expand frequently, leading to stiffness, soreness, and increased tension. For those with chronic conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia, these fluctuations can trigger painful flare-ups. Sudden cold can restrict circulation, while warming up too quickly might strain your muscles and joints.

Massage therapy is an effective way to combat these weather-related aches. By promoting circulation and relieving tension, massage helps your body adjust to the changing conditions more smoothly. Regular sessions improve flexibility, reduce pain, and prevent stiffness caused by the constant temperature swings. Don’t let the weather dictate how you feel—schedule your massage today!

Pair your massage with Oriental style massage oil containing the natural, warming and soothing scents of Sandalwood and Omar upon request, for no extra fee.

Immune-Boosting Benefits of Massage:  How massage can help during cold/flu season

As the cold and flu season settles in, taking steps to strengthen your immune system is more important than ever. Did you know that regular massage therapy can be a powerful ally for your health? Research shows that massage helps reduce stress hormones like cortisol, which can suppress immune function, while increasing circulation and stimulating lymphatic flow—your body’s natural defense system. This means your body is better equipped to fend off illnesses.

In addition to its physical benefits, massage promotes relaxation and better sleep, both of which are essential for maintaining a strong immune system. Book your next session today and give your immune system the boost it deserves!

Also, try upgrading to my special Serene massage oil blend from Elizabeth Essentials for only $10 more! Balances mind, body, spirit. Happy Thanksgiving:  Here’s an excellent recipe I recommend:

Vegan Kentucky Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie

Ingredients

  • 1 pie crust (unbaked)
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar, lightly packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 flat tablespoons cornstarch or arrowroot starch
  • 1/2 cup vegan butter, melted and cooled slightly
  • 1/4 cup non-dairy milk (such as soy or almond)
  • 4 tablespoons bourbon (see note)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 heaping cup chopped pecans (roasted and salted)
  • 1 cup vegan semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate chips
  • Extra bourbon for drizzling over pie after baking

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  2. Roll out pie crust and place into pie pan. Crimp as desired.
  3. In a bowl, combine all remaining ingredients. Stir until evenly mixed.
  4. Pour filling into prepared crust, smooth top.
  5. Place on center rack in a preheated oven at 350 F. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until filling is set and the top of the filling is golden brown.
  6. Remove pie from oven and evenly drizzle over as much bourbon as you would like. I usually go for about 1/4-1/3 cup.
  7. Allow to cool for about an hour. Serve with vegan vanilla ice cream and enjoy!

*Last year I subbed nut/seed butter of choice for regular butter and it came out amazing!

Want to try something new?  Try a "Scrittle Session"

“Scrittling” is a word my dad made up, which is sort of a cross between scratching and tickling. It's where you drag your nails lightly across the skin. In massage school they taught us something similar that they called "nerve strokes", which was similar, but with finger tips, instead of nails. It's extremely relaxing and releases endorphins. It's something my parents did for me when I was young, and I do it for my son. I would definitely pay to have someone do this for me for an hour, so I thought to myself, why not offer it as a service? It’s intensely relaxing, and can clear your mind of any stress. One client recently told me “I felt like I was melting”. Text me at 512-461-4574 to book your session today!

My mom came to visit for Halloween and just left yesterday. So I didn’t get around to writing my newsletter until today, and I only had 1 private client (besides working at the spa on Weekends). It was great fun!

Let’s talk about Massage:  Oncology massage!

Have you gone cancer or know someone who is currently fighting that battle? I have advanced training in Oncology massage. How is Oncology massage different? For starters, Oncology massage, for clients who are currently in treatment, is generally much gentler than other modalities. It’s geared towards addressing symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Additionally, I have an in-depth knowledge of treatments and conditions associated with your cancer journey, and am familiar with many potential side effects, and can tailor your massage to address or avoid those side effects. Schedule your Oncology massage today, or refer a loved one. Gift certificates also available.

LET'S TALK ABOUT MASSAGE: CUPPING THERAPY

Cupping therapy utilizes plastic or silicone cups to create a suction, pulling up the skin and stimulating blood flow to the area under the cup. From a medical perspective, the surge in blood flow helps create a surge in oxygen and nutrients and helps remove cellular debris and toxins. This process can lead to a number of benefits including:

  • Enhanced circulation
  • Pain relief
  • Increased relaxation
  • Detoxification
  • Stimulating the lymphatic system.

Try adding cupping to your massage today!

Updates from the studio: Finding Zen

How I’m continuing to build more Zen into my life, and the lives of those around me and promote general wellbeing: This past week I picked up my jump rope again for the first time in a long time, and I’ve been going out for a walk on the trail behind my house every morning. I do sets of 50 and then walk and say hi to people and dogs on the trail. I’m making sure to start and end with stretching to prevent injury as I ease back into it. On Tuesday I had coffee with a friend, followed by a lovely nap. I’ve been listening to a very fun audiobook series while I walk, drive, or clean my house. In my massages I find that incorporating Aromatherapy does a lot to boost Zen in my sessions for myself AND my client. In all my experience I really do believe that it enhances the experience. And as the weather starts to cool down, I can even set my massage table up in your back yard to incorporate some fresh air and sounds of nature into your massage.

Let's Talk About Massage: More Thai Massage

I found out about these bimonthly Thai massage jams from a former coworker a long time ago, and I’ve been meaning to try to go to one, but it never works out with my schedule. I finally managed to make it to one on Thursday. While I don’t have the set up to start practicing regular floor Thai, I’m continuing to learn new things I can adapt and incorporate into my table massages. Give it a try!

Upcoming availability

  • Thursday 5:30-7 All locations
  • Monday Oct 7th 9-11:30 All locations
  • W/TH Oct 9&10 9-2:00 Club Pilates

Updates From the Studio: Finding My Zen

I had a great meeting with a mentor recently and she reminded me that my purpose for switching from social work to massage therapy has been to build more Zen into my life, and the lives of those around me and to promote general wellbeing. She helped me realize that I regularly create posts on my personal Facebook page about how busy and productive I've been all day everyday and, while they may make me feel powerful and accomplished, they don't help me embody Zen and wellbeing. I think I’ve just been hoping that I can bring Zen to other people during their massages and that it will rub off on me in that space and that will have been enough. However, since that meeting I’ve been trying to focus less on productivity and more on finding my Zen. Sometimes that means I’ve been skipping the gym and opting to go walking with friends more often, instead. I’ve been allowing myself to lay down and take occasional naps. I’ve been more mindful about how I schedule my day, and present while I enjoy things like my morning cup of coffee or saying hi to the dog walkers and their dogs along the trail, or allowing myself to get immersed in a good book. It’s taking some work to learn how to reframe things, but I can definitely see the value.

Let's talk about massage:  Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, rhythmic modality that stimulates the movement of lymph fluid that lives just under your skin. It can also stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system to help relieve stress related conditions. It has an analgesic effect on your nociceptors, which means it is good for pain management. It can help with swelling that is a result of trauma such as a sprain or surgical procedure, or a build up of fluid because of compromise to your lymphatic vessels or a build up of scar tissue that may be blocking drainage pathways by redirecting fluid around blocked or compromised areas. Try it today!

Upcoming AVAILABILITY

  • Monday, Sept 9, 4:30-7 at Your home/club pilates/birthco/Amber Moon
  • Thursday, SEPTEMBER 12TH 12:00-2:30 AT AMBER MOON STUDIO LOCATION
